EAST Sussex Arts Club was delighted to welcome back Dr Graham Whitham who gave a talk entitled Hard Times and promised his audience a harrowing time.
He explained that towards the end of the 19th century, some artists became concerned to show life as it was and convey a social message; that the world was not always a nice place.
Photographs depicting deprivation were now available but not exhibited publicly, but they inspired altruistic artists, who tended to aestheticise their paintings in order to appeal to a wider audience.
We were taken through poverty and harsh work in city and country, migration to cities, women at work, strikes and unrest, and death due to poor conditions.
Yes, it was very disturbing, but thought-provoking and stimulated discussion and comparison with our conditions today. We look forward to his return next year.
Our next meeting, our AGM, will be on November 9.
The club’s Autumn 2013 Exhibition was also held at the Stade Hall from October 9 to 13.
The event began with a ‘private view’ evening, where the club’s president, Dr Richard Manwaring-Baines and chairman Betty Muffitt welcomed local dignitaries including, from Hastings Borough Council, Jeremy Birch, the leader of the council, Kevin Boorman, head of communications and marketing and Bruce Dowling, the Deputy Mayor.
As on many occasions since the club was founded in 1890, this autumn’s exhibition was a great success, with a very high standard of locally-created paintings and crafts on display and attracting well in excess of 600 visitors over the five days. The club’s Spring 2014 Exhibition will again be at the Stade Hall (May 31 - June 9). For further information contact Janet Lutkin on 01424 855275, email email@example.com.
