Police have released this E-fit image of a man wanted for questioning after a 26-year-old was struck repeatedly with a hammer in an unprovoked attack.

The man was assaulted as he walked along Gillsmans Hill in St Leonards just before 5pm on March 24 by a man who jumped out of bushes. The attacker was white, about 40 and over six foot tall with untidy brown hair.

He was slim with hunched over shoulders and had very drawn cheeks. He walked with a distinctive stagger.

Detective Constable Nick O’Shaughnessy said: “We do not know why the victim was attacked but this appears to be totally unprovoked.

“We need to find anyone who recognises the description of the attacker or the face from the efit so that we can trace this man.

“If you have any idea who the man is or where he could be, please contact us.”
