A DRIVER fled the scene after his car struck traffic lights in Hastings.

The Peugeot 106 hit the lights in Pelham Place shortly after 5am on Saturday (September 28).

When police arrived nobody was with the vehicle, which has the registration number LY52 XCG.

A 24-year-old man from Hastings was later arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. He was questioned before being released on bail until November 25 while officers carry out further inquiries.

Investigator George Szczotok said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the Peugeot being driven in the town in the minutes before the accident as well as anyone who saw or heard it crash.

“Did you see who got out of the car and ran off or do you know who was involved? Please contact us with any information you have, no matter how insignificant you might think it is. It could be vital to our case.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 278 of 28 September or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
