THE LEADER of a children’s’ dance school is welcoming new members to the recently established Saturday sessions.

Mother of one, Samantha Smith, of Mount Pleasant Road, has been running the Sparks Dance Crew at Castledown school since 2010, but due to demand, has established a new branch, based at Clements Hall, in Priory Road, which is open to all aged between 5 and 16.

Samantha, 29, proudly watched the children perform a series of flashmob dance routines in the town centre, the result of the first 10-week block of lessons.

She describes the style of dancing as a mixture of street, salsa, comedy, and hand jiving, and said that while they work hard, the emphasis is on having fun.

“A lot of kids that have come to me, they have got the dancing skills, but they are quite shy and lacking confidence.

“The main things about Sparks Dance Crew are that it is affordable, fun, and an opportunity to work as part of a team.

“It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, you can dance.”

Samantha’s 10-year-old daughter Chloe, is an enthusiastic member of the crew, and her love of dancing was one of the reasons why Samantha decided to establish her own dance school.

“My daughter going to all the dance schools, it was really costing a lot,” she said.

The Sparks Dance Crew sessions run from 10am to 12noon each Saturday, costing £5.

The cost of the uniforms is kept as low as possible for parents, as Samantha uses fluorescent paint to decorate plain sports wear.

There are currently 18 members of the crew, but Samantha’s motto is “The bigger, the better.”
