AN army of cyclists is pedalling to Hastings’ four twin towns in Europe next month for charity.
The group of 34 set off on Tuesday, April 15 for the mammoth challenge in aid of Charity for Kids, which will cover more than 900 miles over three-and-a-half days.
The cyclists intend to cover the distance on a relay basis in three teams, with each team cycling for eight hours per day.
They will be leaving the Town Hall in Queen’s Square at around 5.30pm. The first stop will be Bethune in France where they will arrive around 7am the next morning (April 16). Once the team has met with the town’s mayor in Bethune the cyclists will then pedal to Oudenaarde in Belgium where they hope to arrive four hours later at 11am.
The third location will see the 34 cyclists arrive in Dordrecht in The Netherlands at around 10pm. Their last leg is Schwerte, Hastings’ twin town in Germany. The group aims to arrive at Sainsbury’s in John Macadam Way, St Leonards, between 5.30pm and 6pm on Friday, April 18.
Paul Harris, chairman of Charity for Kids, said: “As families are currently experiencing tough financial times we try to come up with as many extreme challenges as possible as we believe it shows our commitment to helping families who need the financial help and support which is not offered by the NHS. Our goal over the next three to five years is to create a respite facility within town. At the moment the nearest is in Sittingbourne which is 50 miles away or Arundel, more than 50 miles away. With so many local families needing this support and not having this available on our doorstep, this is making everyone involved within Charity for Kids determined to make a difference.”
Hastings Mayor Alan Roberts, the charity’s patron, said: “I think this is a really worthwhile cause, and one I am very pleased, and proud, to support. Indeed I am hoping to show my support by giving them a civic send-off from the Town Hall and then travelling to the Continent and welcoming the cyclists en route.”
