Crushed driver fights for his life

A DRIVER is fighting for his life after he was crushed by a lorry.

Gary Prowse suffered serious injuries after being pinned by the vehicle at Bexhill Gearboxes in Bexhill Road, St Leonards, on Monday.

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are investigating.

The 39-year-old from Eastbourne, who works for Drivers4U Southern Ltd, based in Hailsham, was collecting scrap metal for the Hailsham branch of H Ripley and Co from Bexhill Gearboxes when the accident took place just before 4pm.

Mr Prowse was crushed between a lorry and hydraulic leg, suffering injuries to his stomach, side and chest.

The air ambulance was scrambled and Bexhill Road was closed for it to land.

Paramedics tended to the injured driver before he was flown to hospital in Brighton.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Emergency services were called to the premises in Bexhill Road, St Leonards, at 3.55pm on Monday after a 39-year-old man from Eastbourne was trapped under hydraulic equipment.

“After he was released, the casualty was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he remains in a critical condition.”

Neither H Ripley and Co, Bexhill Gearboxes, nor Drivers4U wished to comment on Monday’s accident.
