A THIEF has been jailed for attempting to steal groceries – less than 24 hours after being convicted of shoplifting.
Roger Candlish, 36, of Warrior Square, St Leonards, appeared before Hastings magistrates in court on Friday, January 21 and pleaded guilty to seven counts of theft.
He was given a six-month conditional discharge.
But the next day Candlish walked into the Co-op store in Bohemia Road and tried to steal meat.
At a court hearing on Monday, Peter Bolwell, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was seen in the store on Saturday at around 1pm with a carrier bag when he was approached and challenged by staff.
“He removed the items, five packs of meat, worth more than £18, and placed them back on display.
“There was no loss to the store.
He added: “A conditional discharge was imposed on him only a day before for matters of a similar nature.”
Candlish pleaded guilty to the latest theft charge when he appeared in the dock on Monday.
Kim Goodall, defending, said: “The defendant has a Class A drugs problem which is quite serious. He takes crack cocaine. There is no easy way to cure that.”
Magistrates jailed Candlish for 10 weeks.
