Stolen cakes turn out to be artificial

A HUNGRY thief got a shock when he discovered the cakes he stole from a bakery were artificial.

Stuart Green, 36, from Carisbrooke Road, St Leonards, pleaded guilty to burglary when he appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court recently.

The court heard how penniless and hungry Green smashed the window of Earls Bakery, in Bexhill Road, and grabbed two dummy cakes and eight packets of Golden Wonder crisps.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting, said: “A neighbour heard breaking glass during the early hours of June 30 and called police. They found Green nearby hiding behind a car.

“He did not quite have his cake and eat it as the cakes were polystyrene display items, though they obviously looked tempting enough to steal.

“He admitted the offence to police telling them he had no money and was hungry and desperate.”

Nick Baskett, defending, said: “His benefits had been suspended and he had no money.

“He has mental health problems and is currently surviving by eating out of bins.”

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until August 11 to allow reports to be prepared.

He was released on unconditional bail.
