A SHOPLIFTER has been jailed for stealing a crate of lager.

Michael Reid, 20, of Southwater Road, St Leonards, walked into the Co-op in London Road and took the Fosters beer, worth £15, on July 4.

He was challenged by staff who saw him taking it but he pushed past them, assaulting one member of staff.

Police attended Reid’s house and found him in possession of the stolen lager.

He was arrested and taken to Hastings Police Station where he was later charged with theft and common assault.

Reid, who has a string of previous convictions for theft, appeared before Hastings magistrates in court two days later (July 6) where he pleaded guilty to both charges.

He was sent to prison for 30 days.
