A PENSIONER has been shot in the leg while out shopping.

The 84-year-old was walking down Beaufort Road when she felt a sharp pain in her left leg. Despite stumbling to the ground and dropping her shopping, the women managed to cling to a fence for support and make it home.

She then called police to report the attack and, during a subsequent trip to the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards, an x-ray revealed the woman had an air-gun pellet lodged in her leg.

Earlier that same day (February 22), a vet’s practice, also on Beafort Road in Silverhill, had a window show through by an air gun.

Police later arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage and seized an air rifle.

PC Duncan Cleverley said: “Incidents like this are rare and I am thankful that the lady involved was not more seriously hurt.”

The man, has not been named, has been bailed until later this month. The rifle is being held by the police.
