A MAN who was found with thousands of indecent images of children in his possesion has been jailed.
Melvyn Carter, 69, unemployed, of Malvern Way, was sentenced to 15 months in prison when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Tuesday (May 21).
At an earlier hearing he had pleaded guilty to 11 offences, 10 of which related to more than 14,500 still images, and two videos, of children, and the 11th related to his possession of more than 13,000 prohibited computer-generated images of children.
Carter was also served with a ten-year Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO) severely restricting his access to children and computers, and will be required to register as a sex offender on his release from prison.
Detective constable Chris Smith of the Sussex Police Paedophile On-Line Team (POLIT) said: “Carter initially tried to maintain that he had been looking at sites containing horrific images of child abuse purely for research in order to get them taken down, but eventually admitted that he had been doing so for several years.”
None of the images are believed to be of local children and there is no evidence of any physical offending against children.
