Man in court over fatal hospice fire

A man appeared in court today accused of starting a fatal fire at St Michael’s Hospice in St Leonards on Saturday, July 11.

Rodney Smith, 67, of Quarry Hill, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court via videolink this afternoon (Tuesday, July 21) charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

Two people died as a result of the fire.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on August 13.
