BUSINESSES across the town are joining forces to drive down crime and anti-social behaviour.

According to Town Centre Management group, the ShopWatch and BarWatch schemes – which see traders and landlords share information, exclude offenders and communicate with police and CCTV operators via radios – were praised as going from strength to strength.

The ShopWatch scheme has ben particularly successful, with a 60 per cent jump in members over the last 12 months, from 85 to 136. BarWatch also went up from 65 to 67 and both schemes have spread from the town centre into the Old Town and St Leonards.

Town centre manager Rob Woods hailed the success of the schemes and their proactive approach, and thanked the organisations that have helped make the expansion possible, such as sponsors The Safer Hastings Partnership, Asda and Priory Meadow and groups like The Silverhill Club, Hastings Angling Club and AmicusHorizon who host radio transmitters.
