Complaints against police increase

THE number of complaints made against Hastings police has increased by 12 per cent in the past year according to the latest figures.

The Sussex Police Authority figures show that between April 1 and September 30, the number rose to 56, from 50 for the same period last year.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “While the percentage seems significant, the figures amount to one a month. We take all complaints seriously and will actively investigate each.”

In East Sussex as a whole, the number of complaints is up by 5 per cent on last year’s figures, and up by 36 per cent since 2009, for the period April 1 ro September 30.

The figures also show that of the complaints against Hastings police that were dealt with between April 1 and September 30 of this year, 74 per cent were not upheld, or found to be unsubstantiated.

This is a 29 per cent increase on last year.
