A DERELICT building will be transformed into new housing for Central St Leonards.

The former St Mary’s Nursing Home, on the junction of Stockleigh Road and Carisbrooke Road, has lain empty for several years and become a haven for fly tipping and petty vandalism.

In a joint project with housing association Local Space, Hastings Borough Council will begin the Compulsory Purchase Order process on the building and hand it over to Local Space to turn into flats.

Council leader councillor Jeremy Birch said: “This significant building has been crying out for something to be done with it for quite some time and I am very pleased that we are in a position to bring it back into use as much-needed, high quality accommodation for this area.

“The flats will be rented out through our Choice Based Lettings scheme.

“Walking around St Leonards, I was delighted to see real physical change particularly on properties where our Grotbusters team has stepped in and forced through much-needed improvements to the appearance of buildings.
