Mr Harshen, consultant general surgeon, said: “It is pleasing to gain recognition from doctors in training for the quality of supervised training we are able to provide.

“The Surgical Assessment Unit has a great team offering local people a consultant led service for patients with conditions potentially requiring emergency surgical intervention.

“We have a 24/7 consultant cover for the unit offering patients immediate attention, senior opinion with quick investigations and access to an emergency operating theatre.

“This provides good outcomes for our patients and an excellent environment to provide supervised training for junior doctors.”
