Conman tricks his way into pensioners’ home, stealing purse

A burglar conned his way into the home of two pensioners and stole a purse.

The man knocked on the door of a house in Pilot Road at 3pm on Saturday (August 31) and told the couple that he had been hired to replace the fence between their home and that of their neighbour.

He talked to the couple inside their home for several minutes before leaving. The woman then noticed her purse was missing.

The thief was white, 5ft 9ins, of medium to large build, and about 40. He was pale and had a round face with short fair hair. Officers are investigating the possibility the man may have also tried to trick his way into other properties in the area.

Sussex Police has launched Operation Magpie to tackle burglary across the county.

Detective Constable Jay Mendis-Gunasekera, of Hastings CID, said: “I would ask that the public be vigilant with cold callers and report any suspicious activity.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 1490 of August 31 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
