The RMT held a dozen strikes in 2016 and has today announced another walkout on Monday January 23.

Southern say it intends to run most of its normal timetable today although several commuter services to London Bridge have been cancelled – including the 6.21am and 7.12am Eastbourne to London Bridge services and the 7.32am Brighton to London Bridge.

Several evening commuter services have also been cancelled as a result of the strikes, including both the 5.57pm London Bridge to Brighton and the 6.23pm London Bridge to Eastbourne services.

Shuttle services which only run between Brighton and Hove are also cancelled today, however some other services will call at the stations affected.

Southern also says it plans not to run shuttle services between Rye and Ashford International during the morning and evening peaks, but hopes most services between Ashford International and Brighton will run.

There are also plans to operate replacement buses between Rye and Ashford International.

Today’s strike comes after the RMT held a dozen strikes in 2016 sue to a dispute over plans to introduce driver-only operation on Southern services.

The changes would mean drivers would open and close train doors, with both the RMT and train drivers’ union ASLEF raising concerns about the potential loss of a second safety-critical member of staff on board.
