Young people will be aiming to transform a St Leonards dance centre in a new project which aims to improve their D.I.Y skills.

Build Yourself is a community project run by housing group AmicusHorizon and is aimed at low waged and unemployed 18-24 year olds.

Volunteers are set to paint The Y Centre dance studio, which will involve adding some stencils and giving the room a new lease of life. They will be guided by a professional painter and decorator.

The team are due to start work from 2 June - spending five weeks brightening the venue in St Paul’s Road.

Jocelyn Tilbrook, Build Yourself Senior Project Officer, said: “We’re extremely excited about the new Build Yourself project.

“It will be great to support young people, helping them learn new skills and improving their confidence. Similar projects in the past have always generated great team spirit which is helped by giving something back to the local community.”

Volunteers will be able to take part in a series of taster workshops before visiting The Y Centre dance studio. The workshops include using power tools safely, tiling, laminate flooring and giving old furniture the shabby chic treatment.

There are even opportunities to gain a Constructions Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry. The project offers support and covers all costs of this.

If you want to take part in the project at The Y Centre contact Lisa Buckland on 0800 121 60 60 or email buildyourself@freshvisions.org.uk. The project is funded by AmicusHorizon’s charity Fresh Visions.
