Comic coming to Hastings is "New Lenny Henry" - but don't hold it against him

Preview: Junior Simpson, Venuu, George Street, Tuesday, November 24, 7.30pm.

Despite receiving the comedic poisoned chalice of being tagged 'the new Lenny Henry', Luton's lapsed choirboy Junior Simpson is one of the most exciting new recruits to the Good Ship Stand Up.

Having honed his material and performance skills on the British black comedy circuit, Junior is now in demand across the UK and a regular at some of London's top clubs.

A vigorous raconteur and vibrant mimic with lots to say, his previous sets have included a searing satire of Ragamuffin music and impressions of Martin Luther King, Sean Connery and a Pentecostal preacher.

His personal worldview, performed with style and confidence, is enjoyed by every audience. With his infectious energy and huge stage presence it is easy to see why Junior Simpson is a circuit favourite. He boasts a boundless joy and exuberance which has audiences hooked with hilarity. A true observational comic, Simpson finds his humour in the everyday and humdrum with anecdotes of his world travels as a comedian adding a personal originality to his set.

Although mischievous and daring, Simpson is never crass or crude and his irresistible energy and at times almost evangelical delivery can engage the most jaded of rooms.

Support comes from Joel Dommett - a finalist in English Comedian of the Year and regular on E4's popular-without-anyone-really-knowing-why Skins and ITV's Teenage Kicks.

Since starting out in 2007, he has made a huge impact on the comedy circuit, becoming a darling of the talent spotters from the Comedy Store to Downstairs at the Kinds Head.

As if that wasn't enough, Laugh It Up also welcomes the only Somali comic working in the UK - Prince Adbi. A relative newcomer perhaps, but one who has the material and confidence of that of full time comic.

With a lovely style in his delivery – pacy, upbeat and infectious – Abdi makes the audience warm to him with set pieces such as his Bollywood and Nollywood reconstruction.

Last and definitely least, Observer reporter Richard Morris - who made his debut at the club last year - is pencilled in for an open set. He may of course get called away if any major buildings burn down or a council meeting needs covering.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.30pm start and tickets are 7 and 5 for concessions.
