THE QUEEN of May celebrations on Sunday proved to be a colourful affair despite overcast skies.

Crowds flocked to Hastings Castle for the ceremony, organised by the sweep Barry Jones, and his wife Helen, to see Sara Amini-Asl crowned May Queen by deputy mayor, Councillor Alan Roberts.

Heather Leech was MC, Holly Sheldrake provided the music, and local artist Claire Fletcher designed and made the banner (pictured).

Kevin Boorman, Hastings Borough Council’s head of tourism, said: “It was a lovely afternoon at the castle, with a lot of people turning out despite the weather to watch the crowning and dancing.

“It was really good to see such support for this traditional event.

“Our thanks must go to Barry and Helen Jones for their very hard work in organising the afternoon, and, of course, to Sara and her attendants, flower girls, crown and shield bearers and maypole dancers for keeping us entertained.”
