STUDENTS at Sussex Coast College have been designing dresses for this year’s May Queen festivities.
Organisers of the annual pageant, held in Alexandra Park, visited the college to meet with Level 2 National Diploma Fashion students.
The dress at the first Hastings May Queen Pageant in 1934 was designed by college students so Sussex Coast College decided to renew the tradition after organisers came and introduced the brief.
After judging the students’ designs, they then later returned to the Station Plaza campus to announce Jess Wenden’s design as the winning dress.
The crowning of the May Queen is part of the famous Jack in the Green festival weekend, which takes place over the early May bank holiday weekend.
Lecturer Alison Hawkins said: “This has been one of the most successful projects I have co-ordinated.
“I am very proud of all the students involved, and very pleased they have had the opportunity to get experience and have input into such a wonderful event.”

This year the crowning of the May Queen will take place in Alexandra Park from 1pm on Sunday, May 4.
