A TOTAL of 137 players put their tactical skills to the test in the Christmas Tournament of the 87th International Chess Congress.

Competitors flocked to Horntye Park from as far afield as Solvenia, Germany, Spain and India as well as from within Sussex for the Christmas contest which ended on December 30.

Play has been continuing since then and the final round of the congress took place yesterday (Thursday).

Prize-giving was due to take place last night with MP Amber Rudd and Mayor Kim Forward in attendance.

See next week’s Observer for final results and pictures of the prizewinners.

The congress, which is the oldest in the world, can be followed at www.hastingschess.com
