With more warm weather predicted this weekend people are being encouraged to drink plenty of water to stay healthy and avoid dehydration.

The message comes from Hastings and Rother care provider Bluebird, who say the hot weather can pose a number of dangers for the more vulnerable and older members of our community.

Bluebird managing director Sai Visakan said:““Primarily, people are at a much higher risk of dehydration in the hot weather.

“The body requires considerably more fluid when the temperature rises outside, but many avoid drinking more water because going to the loo can often be a real struggle in itself, possibly resulting in incontinence.”

It is extremely important to drink more water - even if it means more trips to the lavatory, as dehydration is a major cause of urinary tract infections.

“UTIs can cause sudden confusion, also known as delirium, in older people and those living with dementia. If the person has a sudden and unexplained change in their behaviour, such as increased confusion, agitation, or withdrawal, this may be because of a UTI.

“An individual may not be able to communicate how they feel, therefore it is helpful to be familiar with the symptoms of UTIs and seek medical help to ensure they get the correct treatment.

“Here at Bluebird Care we not only work with those who live with the condition, but we are also keen to offer preventative advice too.”

Dehydration can also increase the risks of a number of other issues, including heart problems.

Over the next few weeks households across Rother and Hastings will be receiving information from Bluebird Care about services they provide to people at home – particularly those who might be at risk in the hotter weather.

NHS choices say dehydration is usually caused by not drinking enough fluid to replace what we lose. The climate, the amount of physical exercise you are doing, particularly in hot weather, and your diet can contribute to dehydration.

Symptoms of dehydration can include, feeling thirsty and light-headed, a dry mouth, tiredness, having dark coloured, strong smelling urine and not passing urine so often.
