A NEW calendar has been launched to help raise money for a village in one of the world’s poorest countries.
Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link produced the calendar for 2014, which features pictures of landmarks in 1066 Country, donated by talented members of East Sussex Arts Club.
Robin Gray, the link’s honorary secretary, said: “Every penny of the profits will go to support the Friendship Link’s current project, which is the extension and refurbishment of the tiny health centre in the village of Hastings. Sierra Leone has one of the highest rates of infant death in the world, with conditions such as malaria, dysentery, diarrhoea, dehydration and malnutrition taking a terrible toll.
“The men in the village have doubled the size of the health centre with materials paid for by funds raised here, and the villagers are deeply grateful for the kindness of people in a Hastings thousands of miles away. At £5, the calendars make wonderful gifts for visitors to Hastings this summer, and for friends and relatives nearer Christmas.” Calendars are available from the new tourist office in Aquila House.
