YOUNG people from Xtrax had the chance to undertake work experience placements thanks to the Own Grown campaign.
Those on the 15-week SkillXtrax course gained new skills to help them into work.
SkillXtrax is a series of courses and drop-in workshops which focus on young people aged 18-24 who want to make positive changes in their lives. The course includes employment skills training, CV writing, sexual health education, creative writing, mentoring, cookery, sports, singing/studio sessions and volunteering.
Ian Noble, from Business in the Community, suggested that the students tap into the growing list of local businesses which made pledges to support Own Grown, which was launched in February.
Sarah Shipp was hosted by the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill for five days. She said: “Working at the De La Warr was just what I needed to give me the confidence to get back into the work place. Supervising the art gallery, talking to strangers, has given me my old confidence back.”
Oliver White worked at Café Des Arts in Robertson Street. He got involved in various aspects of the work of the café including serving at the counter and waiting on the tables.
He said: “I loved every minute of my time at Cafe Des Arts. The people and staff were really friendly and supportive. It is a great place to work. I got loads out of the week and now feel really positive.”
Matt Christodoulou, lead tutor at Xtrax, said: “Own Grown has been invaluable and vital to our success. Both Oli and Sarah achieved growth in personal confidence, customer service skills, social skills and essential experience of the workplace. Their experience has allowed them to feel stronger in their working lives, their anxiety levels have changed and their ability to go out and find more work has increased as well.”
