THE number of people unemployed locally has risen by more than 250 in just a year, according to figures released recently.
Data from the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions show that 3,355 people in Hastings were claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance (JSA) in December 2011, which is 6.1 per of 16 to 64 year-olds.
This is 255 more than in December 2010, when a total of 3,100 jobless people were claiming JSA.
Nationally, the number of people claiming JSA rose by 1,200 to almost 1.6 million from November to December last year, and had increased by 142,400 from December 2010.
There were 322 unfilled Jobcentre Plus vacancies in Hastings in December 2011, with an average of 10.4 JSA claimants per vacancy, which is almost double the national average of 5.6 claimants per vacancy.
