THE number of people out of work and claiming unemployment benefit in Hastings has shot up in the last month.
Those receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance totalled 3,122 in August, compared to 3,091 in the previous month.
Unemployment across Sussex as a whole has also risen in the last two months, with an additional 1,424 unemployment benefit claimants across the county, according to Government figures.
There are now 27,606 claimants in Sussex.
Mark Froud, chief executive of Sussex Enterprise, said: “These figures are disappointing, showing a shift towards a gradual increase in the number of claimants. This is not surprising in the face of the worsening global economic situation and the Government’s tough austerity plan.”
