TOWN CENTRE store Birthdays is to close while the future of the Clinton Cards shop hangs in the balance.

Greetings card chain Clintons, which also owns Birthdays, went into administration last week and the decision has now been taken to close around 350 stores from the nationwide total of 784. All stores branded as Birthdays are to close along with approximately 200 Clinton Cards branded stores.

This latest announcement will mean the loss of several jobs at Priory Meadow Shopping Centre with more to follow if the Hastings branch of Clinton Cards also closes.

The store closure programme will begin next week and continue into June, with locations, timings and employee numbers still to be confirmed by administrators.

Peter Saville, joint administrator and partner at Zolfo Cooper said in a statement released on Wednesday: “I am hopeful the action we have taken will allow us to preserve value in the core underlying business, thereby allowing us and potential buyers to focus on a profitable and viable retail estate going forward.”
