St Leonards shop loses power to sell alcohol

A CONVENIENCE store has lost its power to sell alcohol.
A meeting of Hastings Borough Council’s licensing committee decided to revoke the licence at Marina News, Marina, St Leonards, after hearing county council Trading Standards officers seized vodka on sale there that was deemed unfit to drink.
An analyst who tested the contents of the confiscated four bottles of Russian vodka - which were cheaply priced with no business name on the label - said he thought the liquid was of industrial origin.
The committee also heard that 315 counterfeit DVDs were seized by the Trading Standards officers when they carried out an inspection there on October 12 last year.
Members concluded: “It (the committee) believes that the licensing objectives of the prevention of crime and disorder and protection of children from harm have been seriously undermined. In fact there has been multiple disregard of the licensing objectives.”
However, owner Patrick Green said he may appeal the ruling.
He told the Observer he did not attend Tuesday’s hearing because of a hospital appointment and added: “All staff involved in this have been sacked.
“If I lose my licence, a week later I will lose my business.”
An ongoing investigation into the shop is being carried out by Trading Standards.
