Spring is the best time to move

IF you thought that the months of January and February were only good for joining the gym and then failing to go to the gym, then think again.

This is the best time of year to move house, according to the British Association of Removers.

The moving industry is a seasonal one: most people move in the spring and summer given a choice. But if you really can choose when you move home or put goods into store, January and February is a wonderful time to do it according to BAR.

The removals trade association says that people who are able to move goods in January and February are on to a winner.

"During the quiet times, especially in January and February, moving companies often have spare capacity," says Paul Swindon, BAR's marketing and communications manager. "This means that they have more time available, can allocate their most highly-trained staff to the work, and might even offer discounts to people who can move during the dark winter months."

Of course it's not always easy to pick your time for moving, but some people can.

People in rented accommodation, for example, who might like to choose this time of year for a planned relocation; people just wanting to put goods into store; or people shipping items to relatives overseas.

During the busy periods in the summer the pressure on the moving industry really heats up. It's also busier during the

summer school holidays as families relocate after their children finish school so they can start afresh at the beginning of the new term.

So if you are moving house, and you can choose when you go, January and February are by far the best months - if you can stand the cold that is.

Even so, try to give your mover as much notice as possible. "People often wait until they have a completion date then call the mover for an estimate. It's much better if they have their survey and choose their preferred moving company while the house is still up for sale.

When the house is sold it's then easy to give a reasonable period of notice," continued Paul. "Two weeks is usually enough."
