THE HASTINGS Pier and White Rock trust is set to close down its seafront shop after two years trading.

A decision was taken by the trust after they asked new chief executive Simon Opie to investigate whether it was viable to keep it open any longer.

The shop will cease trading on January 2.

The trust hopes to run outdoor stalls and fundraise at various public events in the future such as Pirate Day and the Food Festival.

On Thursday (December 15) the man who infamously burned one million pounds will be at the shop to launch a special Christmas sale.

Jimmy Cauty, former frontman with the KLF, will be promoting his Riots in a Jam Jar artwork. Five per cent of sales will go to the trust.

Artist Billy Childish will be exhibiting his painting of the Hastings Pier fire in 1917.

He has also given the trust 10 prints of the painting which will be sold at £350 each.

There will be a ladies boutique fashion sale in the shop on Friday and a day of comedy and music on the Saturday.

Trust chairman, Ray Chapman, said: “We closed down the shop because we wanted to concentrate on the pier.

“It was originally a six- month plan which saw us successfully refurbish the shop.

“We could have made it work better financially but we feel the time is right to put all our resources into securing the pier.

“We are grateful to everyone who has put their time and effort in and we look forward to welcoming the artists next week.”

The exhibition runs for a week. The launch party starts at 6.30pm on Thursday and is by invitation only.
