Communication tools online

HASTINGS-based entrepreneur Marcus Burns has launched a website to help improve reading and writing skills.

Picture That provides a free online reading programme to help improve the reading and writing skills of dyslexic learners, poor readers and those learning English as a second language.

The system uses a combination of an image, the broken down structure of a word and a natural voice recording to help understanding and reinforce learning.

The world's first picture and sound dictionary was created when Marcus, who is dyslexic, went back to college to improve his learning skills after surviving a road accident.

At college he came up with the idea for breaking down words that really helped with reading and spelling.

Now the company has attracted substantial interest and there are plans to launch the dictionary worldwide.

The East Sussex Enterprise Hub helped the company by introducing it to potential investors and a range of organisations involved in dyslexia.

After being introduced to Di8it, a company formed by University of Brighton media graduates, led to the development and build of the company's website.

Enterprise Hub Director Jim Christy said: "We were delighted to help Picture That. It can be very difficult and a little frustrating trying to bring a new product to market. Entrepreneurs often need help with introductions to potential partners, investors and others who can help with development.

"Dyslexia and poor reading are recognised as a major challenge worldwide and I really like the idea that this innovative learning tool has been designed by someone with dyslexia."
