Business back bid to reopen Hastings pier
A PAIR of businesses have thrown their weight behind the bid to reopen Hastings Pier by donating £1,000 each to the fighting fund.
Costcutter in Battle Road, St Leonards, and Heaven-on-Sea in Marine Court, St Leonards, handed the cash over to the trust ealier this month - with the former raising the money as part of its Making a Difference Locally drive.
And for Helen Crichton Jenner, who runs the Heaven-on-Sea store, the gesture has special meaning.
Helen’s husband David was a huge fan of the pier but passed away unexpectedly in November of last year.
So, instead of flowers at her husband’s funeral, Mrs Crichton Jenner asked for donations to the pier campaign instead.
Speaking to the Observer, she said: “David loved the fact that we could see the pier from our shop and he was keen that we should do what we could to help save it as he was of course devastated by the fire.
“I was very proud that people gave so generously and I was able to pass on £1,000 to help.”
Ray Chapman, head of the trust, was touched by the donations. He said: “We are very grateful to both businesses and inspired by the members of the community that have pulled together to make these generous donations possible, with such local spirit I am sure we can achieve a successful future for our pier.”
