THERE was excitement this week amid rumours that enigmatic graffiti artist Banksy had been busy again in Hastings - but it turned out not to be true.
Several eagle-eyed readers contacted the Observer to say they thought a small painting of a rabbit which appeared on a back door of the Sports Direct shop in Pelham Street bore all the hallmarks of a Banksy. But this week a spokesman for the street artist - who famously refuses to identify himself - poured cold water on the claims.
Banksy painted a mural on the sea wall opposite St Leonards Parish Church last summer which has become a much-visited local landmark. The picture, which shows a little girl making sandcastles, featured on the medals given out to all those who finished this year’s Hastings Half Marathon.
