A HASTINGS born man has made headlines around the world as the oldest person to still be behind the wheel at the grand old age of 105.
Bob Edwards was born before the first Model T rolled out of Henry Ford’s factory in Detroit.
He grew up locally and learned to drive a French car that had a lever instead of a steering wheel. He got his first licence in West Sussex in 1925 aged 17.
Two years later, he saw a Salvation Army advertisement seeking young men to work on the farms of England’s colonies.
He sailed to New Zealand and set up his own transport business and went on to drive trucks and even car ferries.
His wife Lesley stopped driving 30 years ago but Bob has no intention of giving up.
“Driving is a part of me,” he said. “I mean, that was me. I was a driver. And I could drive anything. Anything at all.”
