Black Horse rides again

Preview: The Black Horse Festival, Telham, near Hastings, May 22-25.

BRITAIN'S 'Biggest little festival' is in May and organisers have announced some of the acts they hope will make it a successful 21st year.

The popular Black Horse Festival takes place every year at the Black Horse pub in Telham, bringing some of the best talent in blues, folk and world music to 1066 Country.

Long-time champion John Shotton has decided to step down from the festival's committee but his replacements believe this year's event will be one of the best yet.

Running over four days from May 22 to May 25, the early signs suggest the festival will contain a balance between big names and top local talent.

Friday's blues night headlines with Aynsley Lister – man whose guitar playing has been described as "a fire hazard". Support comes from Sam Kelly's Funky StationHouse and local bluesman King Size Slim.

For Saturday's folk day Jim Moray will take to the stage, with organisers hoping he can help attract a younger folk crowd. Moray is up for several BBC folk awards, and will be supported by fellow BBC award winners Uiscedwr and new bright things Wheeler Street. All the acts are under 30 – bringing a fresh energetic feel.

The World Music day sees the return of two favourites, all-conquering Bhangra favourites Achanak and the King of Rai, Abdekader Saadoun, so that's a day for dancing shoes.

The young bands day remains and the party night to finish features Red Stripe Band, a seven piece band featuring some wicked boogie-woogie and big band arrangements straight out of the Jools Holland book of partying. Monday also features local favourite Blair.

Tickets will be available from April 1 and further acts will be announced. For information or to book tickets visit www.blackhorsefestival.org.uk. And keep an eye on The Observer for more announcements.
