Lauren Furbey, who goes to Helenswood Academy, volunteers to look after people with learning and physical disabilities at Streatfield House in St Leonards.

She was nominated for the award by her mum Paula, who said: “As part of Lauren’s Health and Social Care course she did a week’s work experience at Streatfield House. She enjoyed it so much that she asked if she could go back to do voluntary work at the weekends.”

Since then Lauren has volunteered to help out at Streatfield House for three hours every week.

Paula added: “The manager has told me that the residents really look forward to seeing Lauren each week and the time she spends with them means a great deal to them.

“She has the most amazing caring nature for someone of her age. It first became evident when she was just 12 years old when she helped to look after her Nan who had lung cancer and who sadly died in 2013.”

The Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award is sponsored by Sussex Coast College Hastings and the Hastings Observer Series. The award is presented to someone aged 18 and under who has excelled in some way, either in sport, academic studies, or if they have performed an important role on a voluntary basis in their own home or the wider community.

Justin Rollings, head of marketing and communications at Sussex Coast College Hastings, said: “Lauren’s caring nature is obvious and I’m sure the volunteering she does at Streatfield House makes a difference to the people she helps. I was pleased to meet her to present the award.”

As part of her award, Lauren will receive a complimentary meal for two and a £100 donation is being made to Cancer Research.
