A CENTENARIAN received a nice surprise from staff at a St Leonards supermarket.

Millicent Turnbull, who is 101, of Filsham Road, St Leonards, was presented with a bouquet of roses, a birthday card containing a gift card, worth £101, by Asda in Battle Road.

Paula Gangi, the store’s community champion, said: “Millicent was in the cafe having lunch with her daughter the other Saturday (February 18).

“I was giving out balloons to children and one of them popped.

“She jumped and I asked if she was okay and she told me it was her 101st birthday the next day.

“I said congratulations and asked my manager if we could given her some flowers.”

Les Starling, general store manager, said: “It’s not very often that you meet someone who is 101 in your store and I thought it would be a nice gesture.”

Mrs Turnbull said: “It made my day and it was a complete surprise.”
