A supermarket giant has put forward revised plans for its proposed store in Silverhill.
Asda wants to build a 38,000 sq ft store on the former Marshall Tufflex Ponswood site which it says will create up to 350 new jobs.
The supermarket operator had hoped for a decision on its proposals before Christmas, but was asked to change its plans by Hastings Borough Council last November and to re-position the store closer to the main street.
Many Silverhill residents voiced opposition to the original plans and made their feelings clear at an exhibition hosted by Asda in May last year.
They fear the 30 million development will increase traffic congestion and cause environmental damage around London Road, Bohemia Road and surrounding streets.
Tom McGarry, Asda's property communications manager, said: "Planning officers considered our original proposals and felt that bringing the store to the front, with its entrance closer to the main street in Sedlescombe Road South and Battle Road, would bring greater linkage and spin-off trade benefits to existing shops and services in the centre.
"We have changed the location of the store on the site to enhance the opportunities for linked trips between our store and existing local traders.
"The construction of a shoppers' car park in Silverhill will benefit the whole centre and the creation of jobs during this recession will give a boost to the local economy.
"Our arrival in Hastings would provide a competitive offer and a genuine shopping choice for local people. Recent independent polling has shown that the clear majority of local people support our proposals and would welcome the jobs, great value and regeneration our 30 million investment would bring to Silverhill."
Asda said it has committed itself to enter into a local employment partnership with JobCentre Plus, involving the recruitment and training of Hastings jobseekers who have found it difficult to gain employment if the plans get the go-ahead.
The firm has updated its website to provide easy access to information on the plans. They can be viewed at www.asda-hastings.co.uk.
