A taste of Edinburgh comes to Hastings - and its not battered Mars Bars
Preview: Carey Marx: The Doom Gloom Boom, Edinburgh Previews at Laugh It Up, Venuu, George Street, Tuesday 7.30pm.
The crumbling of civility, the demise of all the animals, the destruction of beauty, the end of the human race and other hilarious subjects are all dealt with as Carey looks doom and gloom in its grumpy face.
There is one business that is booming. The business of doom and gloom. There is a boom in doom and gloom. A doom gloom boom.
And Carey has decided to become a part of it. We're all going to die, horribly. Our race shall scream in agony as we burn. Or gurgle in agony as we drown. Goodbye silly gurgling humans.
This show is for grown ups, adults who can disagree. And it is for realists who may agree, and for depressives who may agree too much and for optimists who will cry and demand their money back.
Known for his knife-edged stand up and his jaw-dropping insolence, Carey Marx has entered the darkest realms of comedy with lines that are efficient, original and potent and he has produced hilarious comedy that is thought provoking and conscious of both its freedoms and its responsibilities.
But now he goes from dark fun to murky reality that is almost too scary too laugh at. Almost.
He does, however, spend one minute of his hour on all that is left that is good.
Carey's new show is impatient with nonsense. He does not know what to think anymore and neither does anyone else. He knows that much because he's asked them all.
In earlier times, when free speech was not a right, the Jester was allowed to poke fun at the powerful. Queen Elizabeth is said to have rebuked her fool for not being severe enough with her.
Important things are happening. And it is time for the Jester to rise again to honour his obligation of deriding it all, of using the last dregs of free speech to propose a macabre funny toast to the greed that gorged all goodness.
This show is also for Scottish people who liked the accompanying picture of London drowning.
Doors Open at 7.30pm for an 8.30pm start and tickets are 5.
