A filthy femme fatale who is not for the faint-hearted

Preview: Susan Murray, Venuu, George Street, Tuesday, 8pm.

At first glance a woman from the Black Country mocking our American cousins for being fat might verge on the ironic.

If there is one thing which immediately springs to mind when you say West Bromwich women it isn't necessarily of a slimline glamourpuss.

But Susan Murray is a svelte, sassy comedy siren, luring the faint-hearted to the edge of reason with a gloriously delivered stream of smut.

Comics who are renowned for being "shocking" and "edgy" sometimes flatter to deceive under their own hype – but this is one feisty filthmonger who has the material to match her mouth.

She looks more Scottish. Or a bit like that woman from mid-90s act Republica. Or rather she did when she had bright red hair. She might have changed it by now.

Either way, the bawdy Black Country lass is funny. And funny as in unapologetically filthy, not for the faint-hearted funny. Not funny looking.

Chubby Americans may seem a stock comedic go-to, but in the hands of Susan it takes on a more savage relentless assault – made all the more refreshing because it is coming from a female comic not just moaning about her husband or menstrual cycle.

At times her audiences are as likely to recoil in shock rather than double over in laughter at some of her material. Needless to say though, the gasps are nearly always followed by giggles.

Her comedy may not be to everyone's taste but fear not, this is no female Roy 'Chubby' Brown. Susan Murray is much more than that and part of her appeal is the craft she shows to elevate fairly simple, obvious jokes up a notch to be genuine laugh-fodder.

Support comes from sketch troupe That Dog Looks Ill and Rob Rouse, who can lay claim to being one of comedy's most lively, loveable and energetic performers.

Tickets are 7 and 5 for concessions, on the door.
