A sports centre in Hastings is about to start a £133,000 refurbishment of its gym and changing rooms.

State-of-the-art Technogym equipment will be installed at Helenswood Sports Centre as well as giving the changing rooms a lick of paint and LED lighting.

The centre will be closed when work begins on Thursday (November 26) until Friday, December 4.

Manager Toby Reed believes the new equipment and classes will improve the centre and said trainers will be on hand to help people make the most of it.

“This extensive refurbishment work will bring plenty of new opportunities, fresh challenges and exciting new ways to exercise in the gym,” he said.

“The best way to get fit and stay motivated is to keep changing your routine and trying new challenges.

“The interactive Technogym machines, wide range of new kit and the IGNITE classes will combine to keep people on their toes and our trainers will be on hand to ensure people know how to use the new kit to best effect.”

The centre is operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of East Sussex County Council.

The refurbishment will include a range of brand new, interactive Technogym bikes, treadmills and cross trainers.

These machines are connected to the internet and will keep customers on track as they record individual progress.

Gym users will be able to sync their phone and apps to maximise their enjoyment and record their efforts.

The new gym will include six treadmills and three types of cross trainer: the Crossover, a skating or skiing motion; the Vario, which is a whole body workout with variable settings; and the Synchro, a low impact, elliptical trainer.

The gym will also have two Technogym bikes and two recliner bikes and new bikes are also being installed in the indoor cycling studio.

The new free weights area will include two Technogym cross over pulleys, squat rack, a complete set of dumbbells, an Olympic half rack and adjustable bench.

A designated functional training area will be fitted out with battling ropes, medicine balls, kettlebells, slam balls, ViPR bars and Powerbags.

This functional training area will also host the brand new IGNITE 30-minute gym-floor sessions which have been designed for Freedom Leisure.

With a maximum of 12 participants in each session, the specially-trained coaches are able to give individual motivation, encouragement and instruction to participants.

In addition to the gym upgrades, Helenswood Sports Centre will have refreshed and refurbished changing room facilities including new LED lighting, repainted walls and new flooring.

During the closure, members are welcome to use other nearby Freedom Leisure sites: Summerfields Leisure Centre, Falaise Fitness Centre, Bexhill Leisure Centre, Bexhill Leisure Pool and Rye Sports Centre.

There will also be some disruption to the changing room facilities from now until Tuesday (November 24), with no access from 8.30am and 4.30pm to allow for the works to be carried out.
