Traders say work to replace gas mains along Royal George Road has blocked parking areas and customers are going elsewhere to shop.

The work began in March but shop workers claim they rarely see workmen on the site.

Paul Harper-Smith, of Lock Assist, said: "There is not really anywhere that our customers can park. Our passing trade is passing, and that is the trouble. If people can't park nearby they will carry on and go elsewhere. One of the reasons we chose this place was because there was space to park.

"There were road works by the school (Southway Junior School) and that was finished in four days, but here there are lots of holes everywhere and nobody seems to be doing anything.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said: "These are major works by Southern Gas Networks who are renewing 1.1km of gas main to serve Burgess Hill.

"The work has been correctly notified in two parts: West Street to Victoria Avenue, started March 12, completion due June 26. Victoria Avenue to London Road started on April 7 and completion is due on August 8. Temporary two, three and four-way traffic signals are being used as required during this period.
