The Queen's Speech yesterday set out the next steps in Building Britain's Future.
Our legislation for the next parliamentary session is a programme of tough action on the big issues that matter to people, in line with this Government's core values of fairness and responsibility.

At its heart is the conviction that government can be a force for good - to secure economic prosperity and build a fairer society. Not small government or big government, but smarter – reformed and responsive – government.

Our focus, as ever, is economic growth, locking in the recovery and forging a stronger, fairer, Britain for the many not the few.

This is a difficult period for our country, but we are optimistic. Britain has a bright future, not of austerity but progress, based on the country's greatest strength: the talent and enterprise of the people.

So here are some of the major Bills we aim to pass in the next session:

Financial Services Bill – banks will be reformed and made to pay for their own failings. The FSA will also be given greater powers to regulate bankers' pay and bonuses.

Fiscal Responsibility Bill – this will place a legal obligation on the Government to halve the budget deficit within four years.

Equality Bill - I will be taking this through Parliament in my role as Equalities Minister. We will place a duty on the public sector to reduce inequality – the gap between rich and poor. We will also tackle age discrimination and the gender pay gap.

Personal Care at Home Bill – will guarantee free personal care for the 280,000 people with the "highest needs", such as those with serious dementia or Parkinson's disease. Reform is necessary as we face the challenges of an increasingly elderly population.

Child Poverty Bill - will enshrine in law the Government's commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020.

We've shown since the last Queen's Speech what we can achieve together. When the global recession began, there were stark predictions on the likely levels of unemployment, repossessions and company insolvencies.

But we chose action - investing £5bn to help people back to work; and helping 300,000 people to stay in their homes by providing help and advice with paying their mortgage.

Compared with the recession of the 1990s, the fall in employment is lower, the repossession rate is lower, and the company insolvency rate is lower.

Our timely action to tackle the global financial crisis is working.

These new policy pledges showed our continued twin commitment to getting the economy back into growth and supporting people during the downturn. People cannot be left to fend for themselves as they were by the last Tory Government.

The Tories' vision for Britain is fundamentally pessimistic – about a Britain that is broken and with only an age of austerity to look forward to. The Conservative approach is to abandon the responsibility of government; to let the recession take its course; and to leave people to sink or swim.

That's just not good enough. We need to support our economy and support British people and the Queen's Speech set out how we intend to do that over the coming year.

The Queen’s Speech has proved to be a tacky political exercise by a discredited Prime Minister and Government.

Mr Foster mentions the Child Poverty Bill and the commitment to eradicate child poverty. The fact is that Child Poverty is now worse than when Labour took power over 12 years! Projecting this performance it is quite reasonable to assume that it would continue to get worse again under Labour.

The Fiscal responsibility Bill has been derided by economists. William Butler LSE Economist :
“ Fiscal responsibility acts are instruments of the fiscally irresponsible to con the public “ Quite.

Business leaders have condemned the proposals in the Queen’s Speech as “mad”, “hard to enforce” and state that they will have unintended consequences which actually could be “destabilising in a crisis”.

Quite clearly the Government have lost the plot and will do anything to try to cling to power. That’s not what the Queen’s speech should be about ! Has Labour no shame ?

...again, as mentioned in the media and my DC, why did the speech not mention any of the Kelly report?

Labour obviously realise that they aren't going to win the next general election so didn't bother to put anything plausible or achievable in, just used it as a chance for cheap point scoring and a last ditched attempt for wavering voters, to keep those at the top in a job.

Mr Foster, you say that it is “The Conservative approach is to abandon the responsibility of government”, is that a bad thing? Transferring powers from Whitehall to Townhall is the Conservative approach. As we can see, big govts don’t work. Allowing people to take responsibility for themselves, the Conservatives will support those wishing to do so. And will not prop up those who don’t. This is not a “sink or swim approach”, it is the only way to get Britain working, out of recession, and out of poverty.

I would like to know where ARE the regulations that are needed to stop MP's from claiming fraudulent expenses, along with a reason why the proposal for NOT employing family members hasn't been mentioned.

1. We want the horse to run the risk. We want to put our money on the horse. But we want to knoble the hore before it run, even though its opponents are freer but if the horse does not win we are going to send both jockey and horse to the knackers yard and make glue our of them..Can't run an economy back up again unless people take risks. Building businesses that might win or fail and make financial investments which might win or fail. Can't put your money on a horse and blame it for not winning. Unless you expect a one horse race. Kneejerk policies which will hold this country back by manacaling its knackers. Could be safe guards to ensure the country and businesses don't go down and collapse again. These were put in place after the 1930s crash. But was taken off by Thatcher after being led by that educated idiot Freedman.

The care bill for seriously dementia elderly Don't ask me about the care as I went through that kind of thing with my Mum. But when asked where this money is coming from it is said it will be coming from the already allocated budget to the NHS. And it it up to them (smug expression on polticians face) to fid it from somewhere else. ARE YOU MAD!! There is a duty of care between Doctor, nurse and patient. There is a written contract and duty between the NHS and the people in this country to meet their basic health requierments. because we have paid an insurance most of our lives. If it was a private insurance it would be in the contract. The system is a mess and money mispent and allocated for things and projects not needed. But are you going to decide which areas get the chop and which don't? We have already gone through that with chosing which baby gets the incubator and which doesn't. which gets the kidney dialysis machine and which doesn't, waiting lists for cancer treatment appointments that you will probably be dead or at a more adnaced stage by the time you get there and the dreadful decisions made to exclude older people from treatment.

Why are all the comments on this website deleted?

Are they touching raw nerves?

I think that for full transparency we need the comments here, so long as they are not offensive, to remain.

Crikey! I did not even insult him this week. Just addressed the contents of the Queens speech. He may be convinced but he knows nobody else is. Shoud be open to debating and arguing every point. If he does not practise now he will have to debate them later on the doorstep.

Thats it. I am going to get on with creating a Hastings Hustings Blog/Forum site. Would really like people to discuss and thrash out the needs and issues in this town and nation with little censorship. Only if it gets down to silly nastiness and does not address the issue. Insulting is allowed as long as it is relavent or witty and funny.

Looks like the comments are back - as if by magic.

Noticed that the only Labour stalewart to still be in the chambers to discuss the Queens Speech was good old Dennis Skinner "The Beast of Bolsover" Where is our "Beast?" certainly not in Foster or any of the other potentials.

Fiscal Responsibility Bill !!!!!!

Brilliant, bring the country financially to it's knee's, deliver the longest recession is history and then try to pin it on the next lot if they don't clear up your mess.
Why do we need legislation for this anyway, why not just do it? That was New Labours argument for not introducing legislation to clean up MP's expenses!
