Good on the Hastings Tory Parliamentary Candidate, and the local Conservative councillors who, last week, held a "People's Question Time", even if few turned up.
They are quite right that politicians must be in tune with those they seek to represent, but it needs to be a year-round affair!

I accept that, as the MP, I have an advantage in living in the town. I've always lived here so I'm in tune with, if you like, the town's "heartbeat". That's why I instinctively know more easily what local opinion may be. I'm also proud that my office in Hastings is the most accessible of any MP in the country- a live voice (that's Emily) to answer every query (9.30 to 4.00 every day) and a place where constituents can come and talk and discuss their concerns, week-in and week-out, year round.

In the Labour Party we have also been, not just talking, but listening. Throughout the past year, we've held major public meetings on Climate Change, development aid and on the local Labour Manifesto, and most of our local Labour councillors hold surgeries on a monthly basis. Yes, talking with voters is what we must all do but it needs to be not just at election time, and the listening is just as important as the talking.

It seemed last week as if the Conservatives had for once been listening when they called in Parliament, for 'no further Post Office closures'. Well and good you may say. I thought that too. On further examination, however, this was a deeply cynical ploy and a cruel deception on those who are fighting for their local Post Offices.

Currently, the Post Office has 14,000 branches, 4,000 of which are profitable and 10,000 of which lose money. The only way those unprofitable branches can stay open is by public subsidy and that's why the Labour government are currently subsidising £150m a year (that's about £18,000 for each loss-making Post Office) and have guaranteed some £1.7b over the five year period to help the Post Office develop its future. The Tories, when in power, never subsidised one penny and yet they closed 3,500 offices.

Come the debate, the Tories offered no extra cash to support their campaign. Most cynical of all, when pressed, they were not prepared to say whether the "no closure guarantee" was to last a week, a month, or until next Tuesday!

You simply cannot treat the public in that way and that's why I and most of my colleagues were not fooled by the Tories crocodile tears. There is a need to get to grips with Post Office services but there is also a need to be honest with our voters and say how we are going to put promises into action.

However, there is some good news when it comes to the Old Town Post Office. There is still hope that the Post Office will change its mind after Post Watch and local residents made clear their opposition but even if not, the government's direction to Post Office Ltd, to accept local authority subsidies to keep branches open, has now been picked up by the Labour group leader, Jeremy Birch. If the Post Office say that they will no longer support the Old Town Post Office then a Labour council would use Government money from Working Neighbourhoods to pay the losses so as to keep that office open.

That's what listening means.

So Michael Foster seems to think that he’s the the town’s heartbeat. If that is so the town has suffered a massive cardiac arrest under New Labour !

He throws in the red herrings of I’ve lived in the town for years and that he’s the listening MP.
Both are irrelevant. What is important is what he actually does and what he/the government have achieved. Lets examine a few issues:

1. Council tax : A regressive tax where a significant number of Hastings families and old people due to taxation without reference to ability to pay. I wrote to Michael Foster re this and he replied on 12/11/2003. Net result …nothing has happened . After 11 years of Labour purgatory , Iv’e given up hope of any action.
2. In the recent budget the Chancellor saw fit to get rid of the 10% tax band , ensuring that anyone earning under £18000 would pay in the order of another £100 to £300 more tax. So hitting the average Hastings earner where the median salary is £18000. Michael Foster voted for the budget rather than his struggling constituents.
3. Education : A recent report into primary schools by a reputable professor stated that primary education was suffering due to the Marxist like targets imposed on them by this government. We all know about Marxist efficiency. !
4. NHS ..I do not think I need to remark on the abysmal state it is in. However remember our illustrious MP’s Option4 and Option5 shuffle. In effect he has voted for NHS cuts ! Even the Tories (nationally) , are against cuts !
5. Gun and knife crime has reached record levels nationally …yes its even arriving in Hastings.
6. The government recently castigated the home fuel supply companies for excessive charges. Yet the government makes even more than they do. Every price rise ..more tax. Time for lowering the rate of VAT on fuel Michael . That may well help your constituents !
7. The appalling handling of the economy and governmental efficiencies ranging from selling gold ridiculously cheaply to Norhern R

7. The appalling handling of the economy and governmental efficiencies ranging from selling gold ridiculously cheaply to Norhern Rock would take far too many pages to write about.
8. Need we mention the illegal Iraq war and the fact the costs have doubled over the past year to something like £3.3 billion. A lot of Doctors and Nurses ! Now that would reduce council tax.
9. MF mentions the Labour manifesto. What he doesn’t mention is the fact that Labour reneged on their promise to hold a referendum re EEC constitution and quietly dropped its promise to get rid of mixed sex wards.

Sadly a transplant is no longer sufficient for the town’s heartbeat. We need a dynamic new body with a more reliable heart beat to take us forward. Adios amigo !

POST OFFICE
What is quite clear re this sorry episode is that Michael Foster has been and is campaigning to keep open the Old Town Post Office and that he voted against the Tory sponsored motion to postpone the closure of the post offices. I will let the reader make of it what they will ! But we’ve been here before with Option 4 and 5 and the Iraq war .

As I understand it the Tories were only trying to get more time to look at the issues, as is our MP , so most of the comments he makes about the Tories are irrelevant.

What is relevant if the statement that Jeremy Birch ( He of the £500000 Recycling Fiasco fame/Climate change £50000 waste). Allegedly the money would be used from the Working Neighbourhoods money. But mark my words …it will eventually come from an Increased Council Tax rate ! If Birch gets back to control the council ,we’ll all be shedding real tears , not the crocodile ones Michael mentions.

Lets make sure we don’t get Birched again !

Foster OUT!,

St Leonards on Sea 27/03/2008 17:29:34
Well said, Darryl, you seem to be "in tune, if you like, with the town's heartbeat", unlike Foster who shows all the signs of senile dementia in the rubbish he spouts out. EVERYBODY in Hastings who talks to me is aware that it was Foster's two-faced New Labour masters who ordered the closure of thousands of Post Offices around the country, just as they are pushing to close down hospital wards and hospitals. People know it was Foster's loony party that short-changed the police. Hastings schools are failing, with help being parachuted in from elsewhere in the form of a "superhead", despite the FACT that there is NO EVIDENCE that these people actually improve anything. Sure, the number of exams passed has appeared to increase but it has always been achieved with smoke and mirrors, entering pupils for exams supposed to be "worth" 4 GCSEs, although everyone knows these exams aren't worth much more than the paper they are printed on. So-called "specialist schools" have proved to be another expensive waste of money, as can be seen from many of our local schools which even the oafish Foster will be hard pressed to deny. He doesn't even seem to realise how stupid people think he is when he talks of his New Labour duffers party as being more truthful than their opponents - Labour took us to war in Iraq on a pack of lies. And then they failed to pay up to equip our soldiers properly.

When you talk to the people that have been let down by the New Labour crew and shocked at how two faced Michael and cronies are, folk are realising that they are not in the minority. Most people are appauled at the way, new labour have let the schools down. Students, teachers, staff, parents. Most people are worried about the Nhs and the fact that New Liebour have failed to deliver. Most people are concerned about Post office closures. The list of failures for New Labour is endless and the sooner that those responsible are booted out the better. Let's have some justice for the people. After all, they deserve it!!
