Today is local election day and its time to vote.
This is a two horse race – on Friday morning we will have either a Tory or Labour led Council, neither the Lib Dems nor any of the other parties offer a credible alternative.

I will be voting Labour and I hope I can offer some good reasons why you should too.

Sometimes when we see only hostile assessments of what the Labour Government are doing it is easy for Labour supporters to stay at home. But of course these are local elections about what's best for the people of Hastings.

Whatsmore remember it is the Tories who currently control the Council and their record is little short of appalling:

Dithering and indecision over the pier meaning we have drift and a total lack of direction – not good enough when it comes to the future of such an important part of our heritage. Labour would take out a compulsory purchase order and give the 'Friends of Hastings Pier' the support they need to give this icon a viable future.

The 'behind closed doors' negotiations that led to Sonrise Church taking over St Mary in the Castle were little short of shambolic. We shouldn't blame Sonrise Church for the ineptitude of the Tory leadership. However, to ensure the people of Hastings get the best deal we need an open and competitive selection process - that cannot be delivered through back room deals and secrecy. Labour will ensure transparency in all such future negotiations.

The Government recently provided funding to make concessionary bus travel for over 60s or disabled people England-wide. This direct money provided for a 9:30am start but the Government has also provided hugely increased funding through the 'Working Neighbourhood Fund' which our Council are free to spend as they see fit. Our neighbouring Councils have agreed to extend the service to a 9am start. Not our Tory council though – they are unwilling to spend the £30,000 it would cost even though the Government have made it possible. Labour have pledged to spend that money and extend the service to 9am if returned to office.

Labour offer direction and leadership as well as practical policies which will benefit those in our community who need it the most – and they have the best candidates too.

On a final note I would like to remind everyone about the importance of voting. At the start of this article I referred to a "two horse race" for leadership of the Council. That is true but we cannot forget other parties are standing.

Four wards have BNP candidates and whoever you vote for today I urge you to vote against them. They preach nothing but hatred and fear, they offer us no hope for the future and pin blame for all the world's problems on the colour of someone's skin. Whatever the question the BNP are not the answer.
So I ask you: go out and vote, make your voice heard and let the Fascists know they have no place in Hastings - that is democracy.

Darryl,

Hastings 01/05/2008 08:37:16
So Michael Foster urges us to vote ! We shall Michael …rest assured !

Our MP chooses to talk about dithering and then goes on to talk about transparency. Its true that the past Labour administration did not dither about creating inflation busting council tax rises ; its true that they did not dither about not having an independent inquiry into the £500000 Labour Council Recycling fiasco ..some transparency there.! Why didn’t Labour adopt the open and competitive selection process for this issue that Michael speaks about with relation to Sonrise.

Michael does not mention that practically the Government has given us practically the lowest Council Tax grant settlements in the whole country for year ….ensuring that related to salary we have practically the highest council tax in the country. A tax which is particularly hard hitting on the poor in that it is regressive…ie not related to the ability to pay. Speaking of the poor …what about the 10% tax band fiasco ?

CONT:

Mr Foster mentions buying the pier. This would shoot Council Taxes through the roof and saddle the council with potentially increasing future debts. Does our MP not realise that he lives in an impoverished area ? Does he not realise the structural pier problems were never raised , as they should have been , by the Labour council …so making the latest problems more critical !

I don’t think many pensioners will fall for Michael’s bus pass offer after they have been hit with council and stealth taxes which far outweigh the costs of a bus ride and their inability to get some drugs on the NHS for age related problems. Maybe if there hadn’t been the £500000 Labour Recycling waste there would have been more money for other things. There are also more pressing projects needing support , which he does not mention.

CONT:

Our MP claims that Labour offers leadership and direction. I think the electorate are well aware of the sort of Leadership that Gordon Brown and his supporters offer. Direction …quite simply ..downwards !

I do agree with Michael however in so far as I will not be voting for the BNP. But its is a little rich coming from someone who is a member of a party which chose to follow its leader into an allegedly illegal war in Iraq costing thousands of lives and billion of pounds …and continues to do so. Money well spent Michael ? Democracy ?

FOSTER MP NO MORE!,

St Leonards 01/05/2008 10:41:48
I see Foster is still backing a party that ceased to exist 12 years ago! He says he is voting for Labour! He is clearly a New Labour denier!! Get real, Michael! Dithering? Lack of direction? Not like Foster's master,Gormless Brown then! He says forget what is happening nationally! Why should we? His pals just robbed most of the folks in Hastings once again and they continue to tax us into the ground while they get rich and chuck our money down the drain. Vote on local issues? Like how his lot have doubled council tax? Like on their appalling record on recycing which we are all still paying for? Nothing to do with us, said Birch and Daniel! Pst Office closures. People dying in filthy hospitals. Teachers striking. Police robbed. Armed forces sent into an illegal war and then not properly equipped. Shame on you, New Labour.
Funny how New Labour are slumping in the polls - people suddenly don't believe Foster any more! You've got to laugh though - Foster and New Labour pretending to be against fascism! New Labour have done more to curtail freedom of speech etc than any other mainstream party in the civilised world in the past century. In fact, they are known to want to ban the BNP altogether. Some may think that it is a good idea, but the problem is New Labour would then ban any other party that opposed them. They'd introduce an Enabling Act if they could get away with it. Someone on these pages wrote today that they would support an anti-New Labour march if one were organised. Keep watching this space guys and spread the word - we WILL be having just such an event when the time is right. We WILL take to the streets and we WILL get FOSTER OUT!!
I take this opportunity to say on behalf of most of Hastings goodbye and good riddance to those New Labour councillors whose seats will be lost by this Friday. All of them with any luck. Hopefully their new candidates didn't manage to con many people into voting for them and we'll hear no more from them.
And just for clari

Darryl,

Like most things Michael Foster says...he was wrong again..this time on the prediction for a Labour victory.

Nationally this Labour government now stands as a dsicredited and an incompetent force. The electorate has given its verdict on this government !
8

Foster OUT!,

St Leonards 03/05/2008 10:35:20
Foster is finished, it is clear that Amber Rudd could beat Foster right now. Just think what a drubbing Foster is going to get in 2 years, when NEW Labour have made an even bigger mess of everything!
NEW Labour may have taken a couple of seats from the Liberals but they are clearly losing wherever they go head-to-head with the Conservatives, like in Silverhill, where the NEW Labour councillor has been spectacularly dumped with a Conservative restored.
NEW Labour are in their final throes at last. Hurrah!!

FOSTER OUT!!!

Mugsborough Citizen,

03/05/2008 18:59:00
Why don' we save the bother of elections and simply "draw lots" for every seat?

Easy, cheap, undempocratic, NewLabour!
10

Foster OUT!,

St Leonards 03/05/2008 19:27:04
Brilliant victory for NEW Labour, Mr Foster!! Just as you predicted! Whatever you do, don't switch on the tv or pick up a newspaper! You'll find WWII has finished - and so is NEW Labour!!

DOWLING GONE!!! FOSTER AND THE REST OUT NEXT TIME!!
