Next Thursday is polling day in the local elections.
It's going to be a close call. On Friday we will have either a Labour or Tory led Council.

Often people tell me there is not much of a difference between the parties but that's just not right.

Of course people enter local government to 'do good' but quite simply some are more effective than others and I genuinely believe that since the Tories have been in charge there has been a real sense of drift.

The debacle over St Mary in the Castle was not so much over whether Sonrise Church would make good tenants but whether it was right to negotiate behind closed doors with a single organisation. We shouldn't blame Sonrise Church for the ineptitude of the Tory leadership.

Remember the £1million cuts the Tory Council tried to push through at the last budget? That would have meant job cuts and reduced services for residents. It simply wasn't good enough and with all the extra Labour Government money wasn't necessary. Labour Councillors fought back. Thanks to their efforts the cuts were undone and valued local services were preserved.

When it comes to the Pier it's not the Tory Council's fault that the owners have behaved so badly in failing to repair the structure but it is their fault they won't commit to compulsory purchase of the Pier. This would help the 'Friends of Hastings Pier' group put together a package that could make the difference and save our beloved Pier.

And it's certainly their fault that with all the extra Government funding made available this year through the 'Working Neighbourhoods Fund' they still refuse to spend £30,000 on our older and disabled citizens so they can use their free bus passes from 9am. Many of them need this 9am service to get to Hospital appointments and the like. The Tories want to penalize people with bus passes by starting at 9:30am (even Rother and Eastbourne Councils have both opted for 9am).

The Tory Council has the extra money from Government but lacks the will. If a Labour Council is returned on May 1st they will spend that £30,000 and ensure all Bus Pass holders can travel for free from 9am.

Not only that but Labour have also committed to introducing a free 'Dial a Ride' service for those who are unable to use the buses.

That's the point. If we get a Labour council we will be back on course to take full advantage of Government commitment to the town. To end the drift and in one very practical way show we do celebrate and support our older citizens.

Remember, Labour says "YES" to 9am free bus passes, the Tories say "NO".

So I would invite my fellow residents to make the difference on the 1st of May - to say "YES" to a Labour Council and "NO" to the Tories. I am confident we will see the difference very quickly. We will see it immediately on the buses.

Michael mentions a number of points here , but neglects to mention the £500000 Recycling fiasco which was brought to us by Labour and since R.I .P. The same Labour grouping that wishes to take Hastings Council power. The same Labour administration that pushed through some £50000 Climate Change scheme expenditure… wrong priorities and another waste of money ! ( Could have been spent on Dial a Ride)

He fobs our old people off with the promise of bus pass travel before 9:30 am. ( Clearly the money from central government is inadequate and it is from there that the money should come ! ) Of course those same old people and anyone working has to pay an iniquitous Council Tax which makes bus fares pale into insignificance.

If the government cares so much for Hastings ……Why have we practically the highest taxes as related to salary/pensions in the country ? Why has the Government re its council tax grant consistently given us virtually the lowest increases in the country , with the exception of the general election year ? Why have council taxes gone up 99% since Labour came to power ?

The pier problems started under Labour. Labour failed review the state of the pier ( H&S) , and when the Tories came to power the pier was in a considerably worse state. Council tax would soar with a compulsory purchase of the pier. Most people are struggling to pay this now ..let alone with further hefty increases. I f the government really cares for Hasting s it should find no problem in buying the pier itself. The vast monies spent on the Olympics would make such a purchase look like a pebble dropping in the sea !

Michael talks of Tory cuts but fails to explain how to balance the budget. OK ..tax the low earners , keep the council tax rising and continue with Labour inefficiencies. Let the workers pay ……..there’s more money where that came from. Services are important …but they should be managed efficiently.

CENSORSHIP REVISITED
Yesterday I had contact with the Observer which had reinstated a comment of mine on the board.

It has become clear to me that that the censorship of last week was not carried out by the Observer but by a group of users abusing the system. Our Web Administrator did in fact work unpaid over last weekend , reinstating some 525 comments. I believe that he deserves a very big thank you for putting in this time and keeping our boards going.

Unfortunately last week I didn’t support him, mistaking the source of the censorship …so I have sent my sincere apologies. Apologies also to Peter L. The Observer after all is providing us with an excellent service !

On a lighter note Peter ….of course I will reinstate your correct surname !

The people say no to computer hackers and spyware.
Invasion of privacy has increased under new labour.

Was not the National Bus Pass scheme a Labour proposal, in such the Lib Dems nor the Tories supported it? Didn't the LGA, Conservative controlled, draw up the plans and ask for the money? How odd Conservative Controlled Councils have a problem implementing the plans?

Opposition is so easy, you just attack everyone and blame them for everything.

I was born in Hastings in the 50's and have seen the ups and downs since then, I hope Labour wins control again.

Unfortunately Government only gave the money sufficient for bus passes after 9:30. Other councils in the country ..including Labour ones have implemented the 9:30 rule.

A council tax increase of 99% since Labour came to power is a demonstration of their imcompetence. Sorry but theres now way I can look at that constructively !

Foster OUT!,

St Leonards 24/04/2008 23:43:41
Michael is absolutely right; if Labour were to win in Hastings next week, we will see an immediate change on the buses. Simply because anyone who is able to will be on the next bus out of town!
Of course, most of Foster's comments above are pure fabrication and spin - just what we expect from a New Labour stooge. Even the life-long Labour supporters have finally realised there is no such thing as a Labour Party anymore. The last bit of proof came when Brown, Foster and co took away the 10p tax rate, which they are now forced into backtracking on -partly, at least. Thanks to pressure from the opposition and a few of their own MPs. New Labour make our heads spin. 10p tax band. No 10p tax band. 10p tax band back. Well, partly. NHS cuts -Option 4. No NHS cuts - Option 5. Cuts - Option 4. (according to Mickey Mouse -I mean Foster - removing consultants isn't cuts! Closing A & E Depts isn't cuts, it's about improvemnets!! Unbelievable! Open University funding decimated. Police forces under-funded and under-paid. Filthy hospitals, with gimmicky clean-up jobs just before elections, then back to filth and deaths. Drug crime up. Violence and murder up. Taxes up. Prison sentences pathetic. Too few police, too few prisons. Senseless wars. Pensioners robbed. Teachers underpaid and striking, while MPs deliberate over what double-digit rise to give themselves and their spouses who work for them. Education failing. On a positive note, at least recycling is improving in Hastings now Labour are out and Mr Foster now has no hotline to anyone in the Waste Dept! I expect Michael is busy plotting how to introduce the much-discussed New Labour bin-tax if his lot ever get back in. Heaven forbid!
FOSTER OUT!!
