In these difficult economic times it is sometimes hard to look past our own hardships and see those of others.
On Tuesday 17 March, the Government agreed to an amendment to the Welfare Reform Bill that would increase financial support for the blind. Earlier this year I signed a Parliamentary Motion along with 220 of my fellow MPs calling for such an increase.
This is just one of the many steps we have taken over the last 12 years to help the disabled.

The new bill will give many of our blind citizens a new sense of freedom, thousands will see their disability living allowance increased by £29 a week. This isn't the only thing we have done to help those who need it. In the past few weeks we have won a series of votes on various welfare proposals that will help more people get off benefit and into the workforce as well as aid for mothers to prepare for future employment.

These are really only a few of the things that the Labour Party has done in the last 12 years to support those less fortunate. Their desire to help people, everyday people who work hard and keep high spirits, is what drew me to the Labour party. It is a goal of mine to make sure that the economic crisis doesn't crowd out the many other challenges that face our citizens.

I believe we have succeeded in maintaining our vigilance in helping pensioners, the disabled, single mothers, and low income families just to name a few. Since Labour took office in 1997 we have lifted over 1 million pensioners out of poverty- that is no small feat. We spend £12 billion more on pensioners than any Tory government has. And we have increased pensioners state income by 25 per cent in the last decade, more than the rise in earnings over the same period.

Our focus has not just been on the older members of society or the disabled; we have made strides to help all families. A new mother is now able to claim 9 months of paid maternity leave, and paternity leave for new dads is guaranteed for all. All parents can receive help to save for their children's education, and we have supplied more help for the poorest children and those in care than in any previous year in our history. And as a result of the tax credit system 40% of families pay no net tax. That's over 3 million families!

There is real help out there for everyone such as the 'Health in Pregnancy Grant' for all mums to be who are 25 weeks pregnant, or the Working Tax Credit to help pay for day care. We have done a lot. But there is always more to be done. We must never just sit back and pat our selves on the back, we must continually move forward to create a better life for those in need and a better standard of living for all.

If you have any questions about how to access the benefits listed here or to see if there are other benefits you and your family are eligible for please contact me at MP@1066.net or go to the Labour party's website at www.labour.org.uk/home there you can find all the tools you will need to claim all forms of benefits.

Why does cll Godfree Daniel keep siding with property developers instead of representing the people who elected him?

More acountabilty needed for local people's hard earned cash!

Does Michael Foster think that his Hasting’s constituents are completely devoid of any critical facilities ?

He crows about how Labour has helped pensioners. Well lets look at the facts :

1. Council Tax has nearly doubled since Labour came to power , penalising those older people on fixed incomes , drastically reducing their old age quality of life.
2. On top of this , Labour’s economic incompetence , and the drastic reductions of interest rates , means that their savings do not generate an income, further diminishing their quality of life.
3. Gordon Brown mugged company pension schemes resulting in a bleak retirement for millions. ( Not MP’s of course !) He also mugged the tax relief on ISA’s and PEP’s.
4. Pensioners are having to sell their homes to pay for care …..unless of course they have sponged off the State all their lives. ( So much for Labour being the Party supporting those who work hard! )
5. The treatment of pensioners in many care homes/NHS is appalling and the Government have not addressed the issues.

Our local MP’s claims re pensioners are bogus !

Our local MP is proud of Labour’s help for Single Mothers …..but a recent report has found that because of the tax system and benefits, it pays for mothers to be single and not married. It mentioned numerous cases of people getting divorced or splitting up for the extra benefits. For those on lower incomes it does not even pay to work. Good one Michael !

In Hastings many girls have left school ..got pregnant …so they could have a flat of their own. Not their fault but a dereliction of the Government’s duty to them. We need to reform this idiotic system.

Mr Foster mentions maternity leave being improved. Fine , providing you realise that jobs will be lost as firms struggle to cope and shut down in the recession. Perhaps I need to explain to Mr Foster that we are in a New World …which after the recession will be dominated by Asia. No one owes us jobs…and if we can’t compete…there won’t be many !

The tax credit system has been an unmitigated disaster having wasted multi millions in fraud and wrong payments. Yes it has benefited some …but a simple tax allowance would be considerably more effective. Oh dear ….I really shouldn’t mention the demise of the 10% tax rate should I ?

Labour’s focus is in confiscating our money and wastefully spending it ; whilst ensuring that the political elite do not suffer in the recession/depression. What nobel aims !

Millions of people’s lives have been ruined by this Government’s inept economic policies. Yes there is a worldwide recession but our situation has been made far worse by the fact that Brown spent our money wastefully , didn’t save and taxed everyone to the hilt whilst employing disasterous economic policies. I note that our MP has not made too much mention of our children who will be paying for this mess throughout their live and the fact that child poverty is now higher than when Labour came into power. Well done !

The independent International Momentary Fund recently stated that Britain will take far longer than other countries to come out of the recession. I wonder why ?

If you’re unhappy with the performance of our MP ..like me ….let him know on mp@1066.net with “Unacceptable” in the subject line.

How many expensive overseas training courses has cll ALLAN ROBERTS been sent on this year? All paid for courtesy of the council tax payer.
More accountability needed here. Explanations as to where the council tax payers harad earned cash is going.

It turns out that Gordon Brown knew about the Northern Rock situation in 2004. And did nothing ! I fail to see how that debacle and multi million pound waste is helping UK citizens ! More taxes ...less money for pensioners.

Then I read in the press that the Government has borrowed more than any other major economy. Those less fortunate ...contrary to what our illustrious MP writes ...will be the first to suffer in any cutbacks. That the legacy of 12 years of Labour !

It seems that Labour is helping somer UK citizens more than others. In Scotland the Council Tax has been frozen. Why not in England ? What is our MP doing abourt it ? Nothing !
