On Tuesday Jonathon Shaw, the Minister for Disabled People came to Hastings.
Our day was dedicated to seeing first hand what's happening in Hastings to improve the lives of its citizens, especially.

First we visited the Employment Opportunities group who work to find job training and placements for people with disabilitie
s. The meeting was enlightening and we were able to talk to some of the people who have been able to take advantage of what Employment Opportunities does. One young woman is fluent in German, another is being trained to work in the care industry. They are remarkable people who have done all they can to help themselves; Employment Opportunities gives them a boost and a shot of confidence. I commend them and many more such groups for what they are doing for the disabled community of Hastings and Rye, as well as the extraordinary people they have helped and what they have achieved.

Jonathan and I then travelled down to Station Plaza for a presentation on where we are with the new health centre. We then were able to help lay the foundation for the building! It really is going to be a remarkable place and will change the lives of many of the citizens within Hastings. It has space for 10 GPs to practice, including a full dental suite, the ground floor will be predominantly a walk in clinic, and it will have the capacity to undertake minor surgeries.

This amazing new facility for the community could not have happened without any of the many factors that went into creating it. Following widespread consultation the building now perfectly suits the needs of our area. The funding was provided by a £15 million government grant. The Government has made a large push to boost funding for the NHS nationally, and we were a major benefactor of their scheme.

With this centre we can provide maternity and pre-natal care to expecting mothers, diagnostic services for those suffering from unknown causes, provide a convenient and safe place to pick up prescriptions and see your doctor about an ailment. With this centre Hastings will become a healthier place, and a centre of medical advancement. We already have a great hospital and superb GPs in the town and this new centre will really compliment their work.

I thank Jonathon Shaw for joining me on Tuesday to witness first hand some of the good work going on in our town. Also, I would like to thank him for the kind and generous words he gave at the foundation ceremony. By recognizing the efforts of all who have been involved in getting this major building project off the ground, we validate and recognize everything they have done and pledge our full support throughout this endeavour.

Yes ..there are some good things going on in Hastings and some remarkable people.

I am a little lost at our MP’s comments of a centre of medical advancement …a little over the top methinks. And the case is not yet proven. We’ll see. Wouldn’t the money have been better spent on Conquest ?

The NHS is struggling nationally …we have the worst rates in Western Europe for Cancer survival. The old do not get the care they deserve. Money is wasted and badly allocated and there has been no reform, whilst Government targets work to the detriment of patients. And if you get Dimentia …the standards of care are frightening.

What Hastings needs are productive jobs in the private sector; that’s the key to the future !

What of the future ? …..Michael would have us believe its “ Up , Up and Away” ..just like in Mary Poppins.

Chris Giles and Alex Barber stated yesterday in the Financial Times :
“ The alarming deterioration in the public finances will tie the hands of goverments for the next decade, ushering in an era of severe austerity, and tax hikes not seen for at least two decades. “
Then the Government Gilts auction failed yesterday and Bank Governor King advised Gordon Brown to stop spending.
The writings on the wall ! Beware of snake oil salesmen.

NB : Council Tax is still on the up !

Form what I read today unemployment in Hastings has shot up by 54% over the last 12 months....way above the National average. Something else on the up !

Appauling. Its time Michael Foster got a grip ...this Government is failing and Hastings has been hit very hard.

Our MP show his ignorance of good economics when he crows that 40% of workers are now in the public sector.
That not the way to prosperity ...we need to grow the private sector. Read my lips Michael ...public sector does not create wealth ...it survives on the taxes we pay. Private sector creates wealth and pays taxes so that we can all live better.

All MP's should have at least an "A" level economics qualification. The vast majority are not up to the job !

Mr Foster makes great play of improving the lives of the citizens of Hastings.

Yet the one area he could have helped , he was one of 11 MP's who didn't vote on The Fuel Poverty Bill ...as his diary was full. And there are many affected bythis problem in Hastings.

I think Michael needs to realise that he has been elected to represent his constituents and his prorities should be with them. Parliament is the place !

If he feels he cannot put his role as MP first , he should resign.

I was born in Hastings; my parents moved away shortly after (I'm in my 50's) - they left because there was no work but returned after about 15 years. My parents tell me the employment situation had not improved during that time.

I left Hastings 20 years ago because there were no employment opportunities for myself or family. Has the situation improved during the 20 years I've been away?

Hastings has not improved in 50 years and I doubt it ever will. Great place if you don't want to work or are retired.
